Statutes of the Physics in Life Sciences DivisionArticle 1 - Scope 1.1 The Physics in Life Sciences Division (the "Division") of the European Physical Society ("EPS") represents and provides a forum for European scientists interested in any aspect of the physics in the life sciences. Article 2 - Tasks2.1 The tasks of the Division are, inter alia: (a) to promote the support and co-ordination of research activities; (b) to facilitate contacts with and between its members, in particular through the organisation web-information and co-ordination of meetings, workshops, schools...; (c) to help in the training of young researchers and in the development of their abilities in ways which may facilitate their future professional activities; (d) to co-operate with other Divisions of EPS, and other similar organisations in any common field of interest; (e) to offer expertise and advice to other bodies of EPS as well as to other European institutions in the field of physics in life sciences. (f) to promote the public understanding and appreciation of the role of physics in life sciences. Article 3 - Membership3.1 Membership in the Division is open to individual scientists, groups, laboratories who define their interest in agreement with Article 1 of the present statutes and who are members of EPS under Articles 4a, 4c, 4d, 6 or 7 of the its Constitution; members are accepted upon personal application. Non-members EPS may participate in the scientific activities of the Division, about which they will receive information on request. Article 4 - Structure4.1 The business of the Division is carried out by the Board, in accordance with the Constitution and By-laws EPS and its General Statutes for Divisions. 4.2 The Division may create sections, with the prior approval of the
Council of EPS, consisting of Division members interested in particular
sub fields of physics in the life sciences. Article 5 - Board - Composition5.1 The Board of the Division is composed of 12 members elected by the members of the Division, plus one representative from each section (normally the Chairman or his designate). 5.2 The Board may co-opt up to 6 other members from inside or outside the Division. 5.3 The Board elects from its members a Chairman and a Secretary. The election of the Chairman and of the Secretary shall be confirmed by the EPS Executive Committee. Article 6 - Elections6.1 Elections are held every three years by vote by correspondence. The list of candidates for board elections is prepared upon consultation with the members of the Division. Article 7 - Term7.1 The term of office for members of the Board shall be three years. No one shall be entitled to serve on the board more than two successive terms. However, such persons shall again be eligible after a lapse of three years. 7.2 The Chairman and the Secretary serve for their term on the Board. 7.3 Co-opted members serve for a maximum of three years or until the next elections for Board members, whichever is shorter. Article 8. - General Assembly8.1 A general Assembly of the Division shall be held every three years
during a conference organised by the Division. Article 9 - Division Funds9.1 A Division may generate income through its activities. A Division may, by vote of its members, in any year decide to request from its membership a contribution to the Division for its work. 9.2 Such income remains at the disposal of the Division in an identified account at the EPS. Article 10. - Revision of Statutes10.1 Subject to the approval of the EPS Council, these statutes may be revised by a 2/3 majority of the Members of the Division participating in a vote by correspondence. |
